WWDC 2012 Recap: New MacBooks, OS X, iOS 6
Apple today announced new and upgraded MacBook Pros, a July ship date for OS X Mountain Lion, and a Fall ship date for iOS 6.
The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro line has been updated with Intel Ivy Bridge processors, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics, faster RAM and SSD, USB 3.0 connectors, and a thinner MagSafe Power adaptor for the MacBook Airs. The MacBook Pro 17" model has been dropped from the line up.
A new MacBook Pro has also been introduced, featuring a 220 pixels-per-inch 2880x1800 pixel 15.4 inch retina display. It features Ivy Bridge processors, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics and Nvidia GeForce GT650M discrete graphics cards, 8GB RAM, up to 768GB SSD, a pair of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectors. This is all in a form factor thinner than the current MacBook Pros, almost the same weight as the 13" MacBook Pro, and with the same 7 hour battery life as the other MacBooks.
OS X Mountain Lion was previewed, highlighting iCloud, Reminders, Notes, Messages, Notification Center, Power Nap, FaceBook and Twitter Sharing, Game Center, Gatekeeper, Safari, and China-specific features. The update is set to be available next month for US$19.99, US$10 less than the original OS X Lion price.
The iOS 6 demo included the new Maps interface, expanded Siri capabilities, FaceBook integration, Photo Stream Sharing, PassBook, Face Time over cellular, Phone, Mail, and Safari app enhancements, and Accessibility features. Devices supported by iOS 6 include iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, new iPad, and the 4th Generation iPod Touch.
Business Impact
If you've been holding out on purchasing a new MacBook, now is the time to get one. As the previous generation of MacBooks will most likely have a price drop, this will be also a good opportunity to get a good deal on those. Those who work with high resolution video, photography, and art will greatly benefit with the high resolution retina display of the new flagship 15 inch MacBook Pro.
